Although Goodhart had no hobbies and played no sports that involved other people, he had several close friends and shared his work with them. In contrast, Dr. Tarrytown had been married three times, with many stormy affairs in between.

But while unhappiness reflects a failure of adaptive mechanisms, it is not, in itself, an indicator of poor psychological health. There was a significant difference in the way the men used humor. Tarrytown's humor was clownish, almost masochistic; Goodhart's was a sublimated acknowledgment of his pain. At different periods in his life, Tarrytown had acquired among his 26 The Study of Mental Health: Methods and Illustrations friends a reputation as a clown, but the tragedy of the clown is that others must laugh at him.

Through humorous verse, Goodhart had learned to show off before his friends in a self-effacing manner. He also used humor to master and to express the very real anxieties that plagued him while he mediated between angry urban factions. In short, Goodhart's stature was enhanced and Tarrytown's was diminished by their use of different sorts of humor.
