Both were influenced by psychoanalysis (a very influential paradigm in the 1920s), but Piaget took from the psychoanalyst Bleuler the idea of the child being pre-rational, and showing what was then called “autistic thinking”: setting aside objective reality, engaging in free association and wish fulfillment.
