As insects develop diff erent pheromonal pathways that facilitate essential biolo gical objectives, the new pheromonal key to the control problem is present in the new population, and can be sought directly. Yet, it is conceivable that many insect species may be selected for the capacity to utilize com pletely non-pheromonal mechanisms of communication, even though the present populations of these species may utilize pheromonal systems extensively. 46 CONTROL OF INSECT BEHAVIOR As man struggles to regulate insect activities by manipulating pheromones, the following considerations should be kept in mind: (a) multiple-compound pheromone complexes seem to be biological insurance and probably have more communicative potential.

In summary, research on the Nassanoff gland secretion seems to be a good example to emphasize the hazards involved in 41 NORMAN E. GARY data interpretation, and the severe problems encountered when using bioassay testing procedures to evaluate frac tions, and combinations of fractions, that normally interact in a complex pheromonal secretion. It is difficult to interpret the foregoing experiments in terms of their significance in developing an understand ing of function of the Nassanoff gland pheromone, as rela ted to normal foraging behavior; most of the observations were made at feeding stations that do not necessarily simulate natural flora, in terms of the quality and quan tity of nectar, or its spatial or temporal distribution in flowers.
