She wrote little, and what she did write was journalism. It was for her a disturbed period, partly because of warning headaches and partly because of the publication of Night and Day in October. It is clear from the diary that 'the creative power' which, Virginia said, 'bubbles so pleasantly in beginning a new book' was simmering throughout those eleven months. By April I 920 t~e content, characters, form of Jacob's Room must have been in her mind in some detail, for she had already given the book its significant name.
This is what she wrote in her diary on January 26, I920 (A Writer's Diary, p. 23): Suppose one thing should open out of another-as in an unwritten novel-only not for IO pages but 200 or so -doesn't that give the looseness and lightness I want; doesn't that get closer and yet keep form and speed, and 6o PEACE IN OUR TIME, 0 LORD enclose everything, everything? My doubt is how far it will enclose the human heart-Am I sufficiently mistress of my dialogue to net it there? For I figure that the approach will be entirely different this time: no scaffolding; scarcely a brick to be seen; all crepuscular, but the heart, passion, humour, everything, as bright as fire in the mist.
All three were remarkable. Two of them had just been published in Russia by the Soviet Government and came to Kot through Gorky: Stavrogin' s Confession contained unpublished chapters of Dostoevsky's novel The Possessed and The Autobiography of Countess Sophie Tolstoi had been written in 1913 by Tolstoy's wife. The other book, Bunin's Gentleman from San Francisco, is one of the greatest of short stories. These books, which I still think to be beautifully printed and bound, were very carefully designed by Virginia and me, and they were unlike the books published by other publishers in those days.
