Aunt Bessie called up to me. I walked slowly off the porch. Annie opened the backseat and Aunt Bessie swooped in, unbuckling the baby and lifting her from the car. Then she started cooing. Ava let out a happy shriek. She looked pretty cute. I didn’t go anywhere near her. ” Annie asked, putting an arm around me. Her eyes were on the baby. I’d never seen anyone look so lovingly at anything. ” “You can hold her, too, if you like. Let’s get her inside, though, Bess; she’ll need to be fed. ” “Of course, of course,” Aunt Bessie said.
I liked the way my arms fit on the armrests, the way my feet just reached the floor, the way the chair tipped gently back and forth. While I sat there, rocking, something on the wall caught my eye: a key, hanging by string, with a tag. It said Elise. I went over to look closer. I’d never noticed it before, but Uncle Hugh has so much stuff in the barn that it would probably take a lifetime to notice every little thing. How long had the key been there? I lifted it off the hook. “Look,” I called as I headed back to Franklin.
Then he turned to me. ” Franklin and I ran out of the barn and across the fields next to my house until they became a few sparse trees, until they became the woods, until we reached the stream. When we got there, we stood still, trying to slow our breathing, because it was hard to hear the frogs. Frogs don’t say “ribbit” or “croak” like everyone thinks they do. They sound like rubber bands. A whole concert of plucked rubber bands: bung, bung! ” “There have to be some,” Franklin said. ” He put the paper and pencil in his back pocket and sat down to pull off his shoes.
