He denied being lazy at school. Rather he preferred to educate himself. “I liked reading about things, doing my own course of study in that sense,” he said. He left school at eighteen with two A-levels, grade E, though he proudly admits that he was more qualified than John Major who only had O-levels. University was not an option. Instead he worked on a local newspaper, then he did two years Voluntary Service Overseas in Jamaica which had just achieved its independence. It was, he said, “an amazing two years”.
