Preliminary resource data and market information suggest that the overall sustainable production level in Russia for the next few decades are likely to continue to be below pre-1991 levels; because of past exploitation patterns, much of the easily accessible commercial forest land may not be ready for new harvesting and the distance between mature stands and the domestic or international markets is increasing. Because of immediate concerns for the environmental sustainability of the remaining accessible primary forests of the Asian part of Russia, which have become particularly vulnerable during the transition period, the discussion in this report focuses more on Siberia and the Far-East - all land East of Ural Mountains.
