Recent research (Rutter, Quinton and Liddell, 1983) suggests that they do. From a contrasting group of women matched for age and social class the findings were eloquent, although the reasons for the difficulty are complex. Mothers who had been in care were twice as likely to have parenting problems themselves. For example nearly half found it hard to express warmth to their children, nearly two thirds appeared insensitive to their children's distress and a third did not play with their child. More of them found it harder to discipline their children than mothers who had not been in care.

These skills often come more readily to residential workers who are used to working close to their residents. The question each person must ask for themselves is related to what makes more sense to the family. Much professional time has been spent trying to negotiate families into an ethos which is culturally alien to them. Social workers have always been taught that they should start where their client is, but they have often not been taught frames for freedom of exchange between where their client is and where they themselves are, and may not feel the trivia of daily life is actually the medium of where work should be.

Thus the move has been towards both skills development and recognition of context. Although the first area has moved faster than the second, the current preoccupation and development in family therapy teaching is towards the application of concepts and methods in different settings. My own study during the same period (Gorell Barnes, 1980) of social workers already attempting family therapy methods (selected by virtue of their membership of the Association of Family Therapy and therefore not a random sample) showed a variety of methods slowly infiltrating practice.
